The song was written by Lynn and Billy Sherrill, and it was produced by Jimmy Bowen. Lead Me On features backing vocals from The Nashville Edition, along with instrumentation provided by members of Lynn's road band. The lyrics to Lead Me On talk about how a woman has been hurt too many times before and now she needs someone to lead her on. Upon release, the song peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart, becoming Lynn's highest-charting solo single since 1975's "One's on the Way".
