Eriksen and Tor Erik Hermansen of the production duo Stargate, with Rihanna herself also co-writing the lyrics. It features a midtempo beat, accompanied by piano and string instruments. The lyrics describe how although Rihanna has been hurt in past relationships, she will not let them bring her down and will remain strong. The single peaked at number 40 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it the fifth consecutive top forty hit from the album. The accompanying music video for "Cry" was directed by Anthony Mandler and was shot in Prague, Czech Republic. In the video, Rihanna is seen wandering through an old castle while singing the lyrics to the song.
