Damien Rice - Me, My Yoke And I Lyrics

Lyrics

My drum, my drum, my drum
Gonna make ya
My drum, my drum, my drum
Gonna make ya come

My book, my book, my book
Gonna make ya
My book, my book, my book
Gonna make ya look

My hand, my hand, my hand
Going under
My hand, my hand, my hand
Going understand

My fall, my fall, my fall
Gonna break ya
My fall, my fall, my fall
Gonna break your wall

I'm in, I'm in, I'm in
Like a big dog
I'm in, I'm in, I'm in
Like a big dog yeah

My god, my god, my god
Give me a rod
My god, my god, my god
Give me a rod

For fishin, fishin, fishin
Fishin, fishin, fishin yeah

My drum, my drum, my drum
Gonna make ya
My drum, my drum, my drum
Gonna make ya come

My book, my book, my book
Gonna make ya
My book, my book, my book
Gonna make ya look

My hand, my hand, my hand
Going under
My hand, my hand, my hand
Going understand

My fall, my fall, my fall
Gonna break ya
My fall, my fall, my fall
Gonna break your wall

I'm in, I'm in, I'm in
Like a big dog
I'm in, I'm in, I'm in
Like a big dog yeah

My god, my god, my god
Give me a rod
My god, my god, my god
Give me a rod

For fishin, fishin, fishin
Fishin, fishin, fishin yeah

Won't you beat my, won't you beat my
Won't you beat my, won't you beat my
Won't you beat my, won't you beat my
Won't you beat my, won't you beat my
Won't you beat my, won't you beat my
Won't you beat my, won't you beat my
Won't you beat my, won't you beat my
Won't you beat my, me, my yoke and I
Gonna make us choke

Fishin, fishin, fishin
Fishin, fishin, fishin, yeah

Song & Lyrics Facts

Damien Rice's song "Me, My Yoke and I" is a track from his second album 9, released in 2006. The Irish singer-songwriter wrote the lyrics himself and performed it with his band members Vyvienne Long on cello, Tom Osander on electric guitar and keyboards, Shane Fitzsimons on drums, percussion and backing vocals, as well as Lisa Hannigan on backing vocals.

It is an emotive folk rock ballad that features Damien's signature melancholic sound. The song was inspired by the idea of being completely alone and finding strength within oneself, which is also reflected in its hauntingly beautiful lyrics: “And if I'm all alone/ Then at least I know I'm free/ To be me, my yoke and I”. In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, Damien said that he wanted to create something special for this particular song, and that the lyrics are about him learning to accept himself and find comfort in solitude.
