Madredeus is a Portuguese band formed in 1985 by guitarist Pedro Ayres Magalhães, keyboardist Rodrigo Leão, vocalist Teresa Salgueiro and cellist Francisco Ribeiro. Their song "O Pastor" was released on their album Existir (1996).
The group's genre has been described as fado-rock, combining traditional Portuguese music with modern rock elements. O Pastor lyrics were written by Fernando Júdice and the music composed by Pedro Ayres Magalhães. It tells the story of a shepherd who watches his flock at night and reflects on life and love. The song gained international fame when it was featured in the soundtrack for the 1997 film "The Wings of the Dove". Madredeus' lineup changed over the years, but their sound remained true to its roots until they disbanded in 2008.
